👩🍳 Instructions
- Slice the onion: Peel the onion and cut it into approximately ½-inch (1–1.5 cm) thick slices.
- Separate the slices carefully into individual rings.
- Set up three bowls:
- Bowl 1: flour.
- Bowl 2: eggs whisked with milk.
- Bowl 3: panko breadcrumbs mixed with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Dip each onion ring into the flour, shaking off excess.
- Dip into the egg mixture.
- Coat thoroughly with the seasoned panko, pressing gently so it sticks.
- Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C) if your model recommends preheating.
- Place the onion rings in a single layer in the basket. Don’t overcrowd them.
- Lightly spray the tops with olive oil.
- Air fry for 4–6 minutes, then carefully turn them over and spray lightly again.
- Cook for another 4–6 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
⭐ Tips for Extra-Crispy Onion Rings
- Panko breadcrumbs give the best crunch.
- Don’t skip the flour—it helps the egg and breadcrumbs stick.
- Press the breadcrumbs gently onto the onion.
- Keep the rings in a single layer.
- A light spray of oil helps them brown beautifully.
- Cook in batches if necessary.
- Avoid adding too much oil, which can make the coating greasy.
🔥 Extra Crunch Trick
For an even crispier coating, toast the panko in a dry skillet for 2–3 minutes before using it. Let it cool, then season and use as directed.
🌶️ Easy Variations
Spicy: Add ½ tsp cayenne pepper or chili powder.
Parmesan: Mix ¼ cup grated Parmesan into the panko.
BBQ: Add 1 tsp BBQ seasoning to the breadcrumb mixture.
Ranch: Add 1 tsp ranch seasoning to the panko.
Garlic Parmesan: Add extra garlic powder and Parmesan, then sprinkle with parsley after cooking.
🧅 Why Your Onion Rings May Not Be Crispy
They’re soggy: The basket may be overcrowded. Cook in batches.
The coating falls off: Make sure each ring is lightly coated with flour before dipping into the egg.
They’re pale: Give them a light spray of oil and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
The onion isn’t tender: Use slightly thinner rings or add 2–3 minutes of cooking time.
🔄 Reheating
Reheat leftover onion rings at 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes.
Avoid the microwave because it makes the crispy coating soft.
