Air Fryer Roast Chicken

🍗 Air Fryer Roast Chicken

A whole Air Fryer Roast Chicken is one of the easiest ways to get beautifully crispy, golden skin with juicy, tender meat. It’s perfect for Sunday dinner and takes much less time than traditional oven roasting.

🛒 Ingredients

  • 1 whole chicken, about 4–5 lb (1.8–2.3 kg)
  • 1½ tbsp olive oil
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp dried rosemary
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika, optional
  • 1 lemon, halved
  • 3–4 garlic cloves, lightly crushed
  • Fresh rosemary or thyme, optional

🔥 Air Fryer Temperature & Time

360°F (180°C) for about 55–70 minutes

Then increase to 400°F (200°C) for 5–10 minutes for extra-crispy skin if needed.

Cooking time depends on the size and shape of the chicken and your air fryer. Always use a meat thermometer.

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken: Remove any giblets from inside the cavity. Pat the chicken very dry with paper towels.
  2. Rub the entire chicken with olive oil.
  3. Mix the salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, rosemary, black pepper, and smoked paprika.
  4. Rub the seasoning generously over the entire chicken, including underneath the breast skin if you can do so carefully.
  5. Place the lemon halves, garlic, and fresh herbs inside the cavity.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 360°F (180°C) if your model recommends preheating.
  7. Place the chicken breast-side down in the basket.
  8. Cook for 30–35 minutes.
  9. Carefully turn the chicken breast-side up.
  10. Continue cooking for another 25–35 minutes.
  11. Check the thickest part of the breast and thigh with a thermometer. The chicken should reach at least 165°F (74°C).
  12. If you want darker, crispier skin, increase the temperature to 400°F (200°C) and cook for another 5–10 minutes.
  13. Transfer the chicken to a cutting board and rest for 10–15 minutes before carving.

⭐ Tips for Perfect Roast Chicken

🧻 Dry the skin

The drier the skin, the crispier it becomes. Pat the chicken thoroughly before seasoning.

🧂 Season ahead

For even better flavor, season the chicken and refrigerate it uncovered for 4–24 hours before cooking. This also helps dry the skin.

🌡️ Use a thermometer

Don’t rely only on cooking time. Check the thickest part of the breast and thigh without touching the bone.

🧺 Don’t overcrowd

Make sure the chicken fits comfortably in the air fryer with enough room for air to circulate.

🥔 Add vegetables

If your air fryer has enough room, potatoes, carrots, onions, or other vegetables can be cooked alongside the chicken. Avoid filling the basket too much.

🧄 Flavor Variations

Garlic Herb: Add fresh rosemary, thyme, parsley, and extra garlic.

Lemon Pepper: Replace the paprika with lemon pepper seasoning and add fresh lemon zest.

Smoky: Use smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and a little chili powder.

Butter Herb: Carefully loosen the breast skin and rub softened herb butter underneath before cooking.

Spicy: Add cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the seasoning.

Leftover roast chicken is perfect for:

🔄 Reheating

Reheat chicken pieces at 350°F (175°C) for 5–10 minutes, depending on size.

For crispy skin, finish at 400°F (200°C) for 1–2 minutes.
